How to Choose the Right Rug for Under the Bed

Area rugs can elevate your space by introducing some colors, textures, and patterns, while also giving your feet a soft landing when you wake up each morning. Whether you decide to roll out a rug under your bed to dampen the sound or make your space look instantly larger, it’s crucial to choose the right size so that everything looks proportional.

We’ve gathered some simple guidelines that you can follow when choosing the right rug so that your rug fits your space perfectly.

What Should Be Put on the Carpet?

Square or rectangular rugs are best suited for any size bed. However, if you have other furniture at the foot of your bed, you may need to make some choices about the furniture on the area rug. If you want to put everything on it, you’ll need to choose a rug with a larger area. There are four options for placing a rug under the bed:

  • Only the entire bed frame is on the carpet.
  • The entire bed frame, bedside table, and bench at the foot of the bed are placed entirely on the carpet.
  • Only the lower two-thirds of the bed, plus the bench at the foot of the bed, is placed on the carpet, which makes the headboard and all bedside tables rest on the bare (or carpeted) floor.
  • Only the lower third of the bed, plus a bench at the foot of the bed, sits on the area carpet, leaving most of the bed on the bare floor. More area rugs will protrude into the rest of the room. This option works best if you lay a smaller area on top of the carpet to give color and texture to the room.

You don’t want to end up with half of your furniture on the carpet because the carpet may look slightly unbalanced and unbalanced when you sit down.

Carpet Size in a Small Bedroom

If you have a small bedroom, you can always put a small bedroom rug next to the bed, on the contrary, when it comes to bedroom rug ideas, consider a little bigger. In smaller rooms, choose a rug that is large enough to fill almost the entire space, which will visually enlarge the room. Make sure to leave 2 inches to 5 inches of bare floor between the carpet and the wall.

If you have a single or full-size bed in your small room, use these general guidelines to determine the size of rug you need. Note that single beds typically measure around 39 inches wide by 75 inches long (size XL single beds are designed for taller people and are 80 inches long). The dimensions of a full-size bed or double bed are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.

  • A 4ft x 6ft or 5ft x 8ft rug fits only two-thirds of the bottom of the bed.
  • A 6ft x 9ft rug fits the bed, nightstand, and bench at the foot of the bed.
  • A 9ft x 12ft rug fits two single beds with a bedside table in the middle and two benches at each foot.

Carpet Size in Large Bedrooms

Choosing a rug that is too small for a large bedroom can throw the space out of balance. If you do opt for a large rug that takes up most of the room, leave at least 8 inches of space between the edge of the rug and the wall.

In larger rooms, you may have a queen or king bed. Use these rough guidelines to choose the right rug for a large bedroom. Consider the size of the larger bed. A queen size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. The king-size bed measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. The California King size bed measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

  • An 8ft x 10ft or 9ft x 12ft rug fits two-thirds of the bottom of a queen or king-size bed, but not a bedside table.
  • A 12ft x 15ft rug will look balanced under an elongated California king-size bed, and a rug of this size can even fit under a bedside table.
  • A general rule of thumb states that rugs should always extend at least 18 inches to 24 inches from the sides and feet of queen and king beds.

A Small Rug Under the Dresser

No matter how big your bedroom or bed is, the rug should never be pushed against the edge or legs of a dresser or other large piece of furniture. Choose a rug that’s large enough to slide completely underneath the entire vanity. Alternatively, choose a rug that is small enough to leave at least 2 or 3 inches of floor between the edge of the carpet and the furniture.

Select a Style and Material

Area rugs come in a variety of styles, textures, materials, and pile heights. The best bedroom rugs are usually plush long-plush rugs, and the most comfortable types of bedroom rugs are soft cotton rugs, smooth silk-blend rugs, gorgeous polyester fibers, and fun faux fur. In a more formal or traditional-style bedroom, a wool rug may be sturdy, warm, and aesthetically pleasing.

Decide whether your bedroom rug wants to be calm, down-to-earth, or dramatic so you can choose the right color and pattern.

Carpet Mats and Maintenance

Even if your rug is under the bed, the edges can still build up, creating a tripping hazard. Double-sided carpet tape is one of the best solutions. Alternatively, placing a non-slip carpet mat underneath the entire carpet can keep the edges down.

Consider placing a carpet mat underneath the carpet. Carpet mats have many benefits, such as adding another layer of soft cushioning underfoot, reducing noise in the room, and isolating the space from the cold subfloor. Felt carpet mats are cushioning, while rubber carpet mats help the carpet stay in place better on bare floors.

With the right care, give your carpet a new look. Under the weight of the bed, the rug will be dented. Take care to flip the carpet frequently so that the dents can be removed with an ice cube treatment. Allow a small piece of ice to melt over the notch, then use your fingers to loosen the fibers. Just make sure you dry the frozen place thoroughly so you don’t accidentally step into a puddle of cold water in the morning.
